Mirabelle

“Mirabelle” was inspired by the novella, Shopgirl, by Steve Martin. I like to write songs about moments of transition. Be they moments of decision or indecision, I think we experience the sublime in those moments: all the weight and expanse of existence, literally every possible choice, is open to you. That’s terrifying but also liberating. Whether you believe that we’re programmed by our experiences, conditioning and biology to make certain choices or whether you believe that we are existentially free, choosing, agents, (that every step is a choice you alone are making), there’s a vertiginous sense of terror/wonder involved, and I think that makes for good art. Or maybe I should say, that those are the moments I like a song to live in. So, even though this song is written from the point of view of a character in the middle of a breakup, about her loneliness, fear, and ambivalence, it’s really about choice. As is everything.

Mirabelle by Mappa Mundi

Musically, it’s all about the lydian mode (built on the 4th of the tonic scale). You might say it’s sort of a love letter to the lydian mode but I do tend to use those sounds a lot. What can I say? I like the tension. If music is all about tension and release, then I like to draw out the tension, make it pretty or agitating in a way that gets under your skin, and then resolve it hopefully in an interesting way.

Also, since a lot of these songs were originally written on piano (which is how I usually start), I wanted the piano to play a significant role in this. It’s playing a combination of the bass, cello and violin parts, including the counterpoint that gets passed from the cello to the violin.

Lastly, a word on recording. I’m learning as I go. That’s one of the points of this series. So, I’m experimenting with compression right now which has its pluses and minuses. Pluses: it can get more richness out of a recorded instrument. Minuses: well, I like the way this guy says it. Thoughts? My thinking is that it’s like nearly everything. Neither good nor bad, just what you do with it.

No More

“No More” sprang to life, fully-formed, through a process of spontaneous generation. Usually my writing process involves lots of trial and error and experimentation but every once in a while, a song (verses, choruses, and all) just appears fully, or nearly-fully formed.

No More by Mappa Mundi

Lyrically, I’d been playing with the idea of jettisoning the ideas we carry that tether us, as it were. Ballast. This song is intentionally open-ended so I’m a little reluctant to go into its “meaning.” But I will say that: there are things that keep us down, and things that, the letting go of which, unmoor us. Is it good to be unmoored or better to be connected? I guess it depends on what you’re leaving and where you’re going. Hence the title of our first EP!

Also, I’ve always been a fan of Motown, as well as the Wall of Sound (sworn enemies, I know, but what are you gonna do?). So, I think of many of these songs as having baroque elements but also rich, romantic, layered sections too. Even those bits, though, are comprised of intricately locking complimentary parts. Complexity within Simplicty. Or vice versa. Whatever. At least that’s the goal. This is especially evident when all the parts involved (strings, accordion, etc.) are present. These recordings are smaller-scale versions of that idea but, again, check out the album version of this song for a good example!

Cool

“Cool” is the obligatory song about dating, about that excited feeling when you meet someone with whom you click, but then, the next day at work, when you both are working the same shift, you realize that it was all in your head. And then things at your day job are suddenly totally uncomfortable for everyone involved. Yeah… Clearly I had been listening to a lot of old, 90s-era Weezer songs when I wrote it.

Cool by Mappa Mundi

This is another older song that was written as a poppy rock song and then, when I got the idea for this crazy Chamber Pop experiment stuck in my head, was reworked in true Mappa Mundi fashion, with string arrangements, ukulele, etc. I had the cello doing parallel 5ths like the guitar might do in rock, and the violin playing what might be a lead guitar part. The verses are in that folk-y baroque style that we often mine. You’ll see what I mean when you listen to the album version of this song: http://mappamundi.bandcamp.com/.

The nature of this blog being what it is, I’ve tried reverse-engineering the song back to a rock song, though with weird, distorted trumpet and ukulele of course! As always, downloading and sharing are enabled through the buttons on the player.

Lost

“Lost” is an older song, one of the earliest to earn the Mappa Mundi label. It was originally envisioned as a rock song with loud, driving guitars, but then when I started this whole Chamber Pop experiment it turned into one of our clearest examples of that. For this series, however, I wanted to try to strip it down again, with the piano taking (some of) the string parts. It’s still got the distorted ukulele but it’s weird for me to hear it without the string arrangements. Someday, when the Song of the Fortnight process is more streamlined we’ll do another version involving the best of both worlds!

Lost by Mappa Mundi

This song came together a few years ago, after a period in which I had to stop playing altogether for a while due to wrist injuries from practicing too much. Oh, cruel irony! Needless to say, that was a bad time. However, it eventually forced me to think about what it meant to be an artist, and specifically what that meant to me. Eventually, this whole spate of material came out of that period, and this song especially became, in some ways, a thematic call to arms for Mappa Mundi. Or what would become Mappa Mundi. Or what is becoming Mappa Mundi.

Therapy sessions aside, you recording geeks may be interested to know that the effect at the end is actually created with a muted trumpet and tinkering with some digital delay. I just bought a real acoustic (or semi-acoustic) delay pedal, so I can’t wait to expand on that idea. Yay, psychedelic trumpet!

So Obscure

“So Obscure” definitely falls into the category of story songs told through the use of inner monologue. It’s about two people with the arguably noble ambitions of creating something meaningful and valuable with their lives. Despite continually scaling back their expectations and dreams, they remain frustrated. Over time, they realize their dreams are unattainable, that the world of beauty, reason, and art simply doesn’t exist. Their ideals have no place in the real world and it doesn’t do to dwell too long in the realm of ideals. You’ll be ruined for the real world. Yeah, it’s a literary reference. I know!

So Obscure by Mappa Mundi

The instrumentation is guitar, voice, ukulele, distorted uke, some basic percussion, and fuzzed-out keyboards. The string parts had to be left out, but I’ll record another version soon enough with those in. For comparison’s sake.

Out Here

I’ve been thinking a lot about the concepts of choice and absurdity – about the idea of planning in general, and moreover how so much of our frustration and loneliness comes from that tension. At least mine does.

Anyway, I tend to lean toward ‘story’ songs usually, and toward writing from the perspective(s) of the character(s) as sort of an inner monologue. So this song is the realization (or fear?) that all of the character’s plans and choices might be irrelevant after all, a big lie, or worse yet, a joke, and that he/she might really be out too far with a false map.

Musically, I had been tinkering with the chords that eventually became the intro and bridges, which sounded old-worldy enough to be appropriate for a Mappa Mundi song. Also, I’ve been trying to write in more pentatonic or bluesy modes. This is rock ‘n’ roll after all! So, after combining those two ideas the song just fell into place, coming from wherever it is these things come.

I’m pretty pleased with the fuzz on the trumpet sound. I think it sounds old-timey and simultaneously crunchy/rocky. I mean, who needs lead guitar when distorted trumpets sound so cool, right? That might be our manifesto…

Let me know what you think!

Right

“Right” came out of feelings of weepy, crying-into-your-whiskey sentimentality and lock-jawed stoicism, while thinking about ideas of loss and change, and realizing that no genre better serves that paradox than a country song. So, “Right” is an attempt to stay within the confines of a genre as an experiment. It turns out working within certain arbitrary rules really can be extremely liberating. It also seemed like the appropriate time for some depression-era and/or Mariachi-style trumpet flourishes.

The title, if you’re interested, comes from a concept in Vedic Brahmanism called “ta,” which is also a common origin of the English word “right.” It refers to the proper order of nature, etc., and I had been thinking about what happens when that gets upset.

Let me know what you think in the comments below…

Song of the Fortnight

The store is now up. Please follow the link to our bandcamp page. Bandcamp is a great site that lets you host high quality audio files and sell things like albums for free. We’re selling our recently released EP, “And in This Way We Come Unmoored…” there.

As I said we’ll have photos, videos, etc. coming soon. But the main thing we’re working on is what I’m calling our Song of the Fortnight series. Every 2 weeks or so we will post song sketches, doodles, more experimental pieces, and fully-fledged masterpieces (naturally) in a sort of song-writing blog format. These will include brand new songs, new arrangements of MM hits, as well as new arrangements of material from our back catalog. Most, if not all, will be recorded at Mappa Mundi studio (my apartment). All of these will be available for free download, so please do check in periodically as the site comes together and as more stuff is posted. Of course I’ll let you all know when the Song of the Fortnight Series is launched, and keep checking back for news.
